Bread Plate

Per page: 12/24/48/All

The small plates that go to the left of a place setting, for bread and butter. 18 items.

Sizes and shapes

  • 15 cm round – the classic: enough for two slices or a roll.
  • 16.5×16.5 cm square – a more modern shape that suits rectangular platters.
  • With a wide rim – easier to pick up without touching the bread.
  • Bread platter – long, for a sliced loaf in the middle of the table.

Materials

15 items are porcelain: white Fine Porcelain and Orient, matte black Slatestone, gold-rimmed models from the Diamond line and single pieces from Ilona, Art & Craft and Coral Blue. Three plates are bamboo – a warm, matte material that contrasts well with white tableware at breakfast.

Other uses

A 15 cm plate often serves as a base for a cup without a saucer, a plate for cake with coffee, or somewhere to put stones and peel with fruit. It is the cheapest way to make a setting look complete.

Larger plates are in plates, and butter dishes in serving and accessories.

Washing

14 of the 18 items are dishwasher safe. The four exceptions are the bamboo plates and gold-rimmed models – wash those by hand and wipe dry.

Frequently asked questions

Which side does the bread plate go on?

To the left of the setting, above the forks. The butter knife rests on it, blade turned towards the centre of the plate.

Is a 15 cm plate enough for dessert?

For a biscuit or a slice of cheesecake, yes. A full dessert with garnish wants 19–21 cm.

Is bamboo dishwasher safe?

No. Wash it by hand in warm water and wipe dry, or the wood will swell and crack over time.
